More Politicians Withdraw Support of PIPA and SOPA

cheatsheet:

More politicians have retracted their support of either or both the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) since Rep. Ben Quayle (R-AZ) and Rep. Lee Terry (R-NB), two co-sponsors of SOPA, did so yesterday and today

Talking Points Memo reports that Senator John Boozman (R-AK), an original cosponsor of the bill, has also withdrawn support for PIPA, posting a note to his Facebook page this afternoon, writing:

I can say, with all honesty, that the feedback I received from Arkansans has been overwhelmingly in opposition to the Senate bill (S.968, the PROTECT IP Act) in its current form. That is why I am announcing today that I intend to withdraw my support for the Protect IP Act.

Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Jerry Moran (R-KS), also cosponsors of PIPA, tweeted their withdrawals today as well. Additionally Senators Jeff Markey (D-OR) and Allen West (R-FL) also withdrew support. Not to be outdone, Representatives Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Mike Honda (D-CA) blacked out their websites in support.

On Missing e: Here’s what one blogger sent Tumblr

shortformblog:

wistfuldreamer:

Because Missing-e is connected to your browser - not your account. I only have M-e installed on Chrome. So as a test I logged on using IE, Safari and Firefox. And I still had the message telling me to ‘uninstall’ M-e. Yet my second account, which I’ve only ever used on FF, and is not connected to my email address, does not have the message at all.

According to Tumblrs privacy policy, they should not be able to access ‘users information regarding (…) extensions or third party software’. Clearly though, they have. So I think the REAL privacy problem is the fact that somehow tumblr staff are obtaining this information, which they should not be able to access, and are targeting users.

Never mind the fact that I didn’t even have Missing-E INSTALLED on three browsers, and yet the message still popped up on all of them - even after closing it again - is proof of this.

Sort your shit out tumblr

Thanks to Maurice Cherry for bringing this to our attention.

Tumblr is full of shit

riverwaltz replied to your post: shimmyshimmypow replied to your post: So Tumblr…

I have AdBlock Plus on Firefox and still got it.

Yeah, I spoke too soon. For some reason, there was some kind of lag until I got the pop-up too. Oh well, at least I got to complain about Chrome today!

I honestly don’t know what kind of “support” Tumblr offered me before I chose to forgo it in favor of keeping Missing E.

  1. My account is linked to a throwaway e-mail address with no way of ‘hackers’ discovering my personal information.
  2. I serve as my own tech support. Any problems I’ve had with Tumblr, I’ve fixed myself with googling, browser tweaks, and various extensions and scripts.
  3. And I’ve seen numerous instances where people have written to Tumblr’s staff, only to receive a dismissive or unhelpful response. Tumblr offers its users about as much support as a bralette.

The main reason I don’t like Google Chrome

…is that I have really bad eyesight. Even with glasses/contacts. I tried using Chrome because I had problems with Firefox being super-slow and crashing constantly, but I quickly discovered that it’s much less customizable than Firefox. Most problematically, you can’t adjust the zoom between 100% (too small) and 120% (stupidly big).

So I went back to Firefox. And I discovered CCleaner and Memory Fox and now Firefox is just as fast as Chrome was for me and rarely crashes.

Besides, Google owns my internet life in almost every other way except for my browser. It’s my one tiny act of resistance against the hegemon.

I have Adblock on chrome and it came up.

Another reason why Firefox is superior to Chrome.

1. Acoustic Kitty

This can never stop being the best spy scheme in the world. A cat was split open (with surgery) and stuffed with a radio, and had its tail wired so it could turn into an antenna. The cat recovered from surgery….and was trained to go up to people and sit quietly beside them. It was also specially trained to ignore the many distractions that most cats chase after. At last, after millions of dollars worth of medical, technical, and training services, it was released a safe distance away from two surveillance targets. Sure of its mission, it went straight for the targets … and was struck by a taxi and immediately killed. The project was abandoned, or so they say. Every pet in your home could be wired right now. Hell, have you ever had your appendix out? Your tonsils? They might be inside you. To check, go outside and see if you get the urge to throw yourself in front of a taxi.
